FC Diablos fall to Steel City 3-2, two goals in extra time not enough
Joliet, Illinois – After much delay to lightning in the area, the match finished between Steel City FC and FC Diablos 3-2. The loss puts a dent in FC Diablos’ run to get to the top of the table behind RWB Adria.
The match only got to the 27th minute mark before both teams were sent into a shelter in place for the lightning strikes near the stadium. It took over an hour of waiting and well into the night for the match to restart.
Off the restart, Steel City earned a corner almost immediately within two minutes of coming back. A header off the corner bounced past goalkeeper Peter Wagner to give Kyle Seymour the first goal of the game.
The next goal came in the 58th minute and again it was from a corner. It failed to find a head in the box this time, but a clearance fell to the feet of Steel City. A shot low and driven into the corner was attempted to be cleared, but just slipped off of Kamoy Creary into goal.
Nine minutes later Steel City went up to 3-0 as Jayson Iniguez slotted the ball past Wagner to seal the win.
Although frustrated, FC Diablos were not going to go down without getting some goals behind the net. Champaign native Magnus Parente did some slick skills to get around his defenders and blasted the ball towards goal. It rattled off the crossbar and unfortunately didn’t go in.
It wasn’t until stoppage time where both goals got on the scoreboard. Adrian Roman was fouled in the box and it was called a penalty for FC Diablos. Bloomington local Jordan Walker stepped to the spot and slotted it into the bottom left corner.
Still in extra time Parente got the ball on the top of the box and took a chance. His shot slotted past the Steel City goalkeeper into the bottom left corner once again to make the score 3-2.
FC Diablos now hold a 3-2-2 record heading into the last four games of the season.
